RANT: IGNORANCE ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS [DEPRESSION]
Okay so I made a post about how I may get cut off from my insurance, which means I won’t be able to afford my antidepressants. Which would cause me to spiral back into depression.
In response professorbuns told me, “You’re delusional”.
So I asked her how I was delusional, and she came up with the first response. Then you obviously see what came next.
This is the definition of biological:
bi·o·log·i·cal
/ˌbīəˈläjikəl/Adjective
- Relating to biology or living organisms.
- Genetically related.
SynonymsbiologicOh yeah I definitely didn’t go to 5th grade or anything. I obviously don’t know what I’m talking about.
This is what I hate the most. When people are truly uneducated about an illness whether or not they have it themselves.
I learned about the causes of depression from research regarding my own depression, my psychiatrist talking to me about it, and taking a basic psychology course in High School.
Not only can depression be caused by biochemical imbalances in the brain but also social and environmental factors.
And YES some people do NOT need antidepressants because they treat their depression in a different way. Whether it’s therapy or something else.
However we also have people who need medication. I am one of them, I have had therapy and tried other methods but they didn’t work. Finally when I was old enough I took my mental health into my own hands and began taking antidepressants. It helped immensely and my entire family noticed a change in my personality.
I was more relaxed, calm, and I was able to function properly.
This also applies to other things.
Some people don’t use medicine to cure a cold, they just lay in bed and rest.
Other’s may need another approach and use medicine.
What works for some, might not work for others.
WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.
But being ignorant to how a mental illness actually work and how some people must treat it is just stupid.
Also just because someone may have it worse than you, does not invalidate how you feel.
Yeah I’m dependent on my medication because it levels me out, I CAN go without it, but then I’m completely suicidal.Being dependent on medicine is NOT a “bad habit”. Are you going to tell my grandfather with hypertension that he shouldn’t take medicine that is causing him from having a 3rd heart attack that he has a “bad habit”?
Are you going to tell cancer patients that they shouldn’t depend on live saving medicine because its a “bad habit”?
No.
Mental illness is a ILLNESS, and should be treated like one. People with mental illness are sick, they are ill. Just like any other illness, it must be treated. And there are many different ways to treat an illness.
Moral: Don’t be an ignorant little shit about mental illness, how it works, and how some people treat it. Seriously. It’s not cool.
